Ajay Seth, former Finance Secretary and Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) will take over as the new Chairman of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).

Seth, a 1987 batch IAS officer from the Karnataka cadre, will hold this post for three years or until he attains the age of 65, or until further orders — whichever comes first, according to the government notification issued on Thursday.

The insurance regulator has been functioning without a chief since Debasish Panda resigned in March this year.

Seth superannuated as Finance Secretary on June 30, 2025. He took over the post in March after Tuhin Kanta Pandey was appointed Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

Earlier, there were talks that Seth could be appointed an Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington.
