On Tuesday, Rajiv Gauba, a former cabinet secretary, was appointed as a full-time member of the NITI Aayog, according to an official notification.
Gauba, who belongs to the 1982 batch of the IAS from the Jharkhand cadre, held the position of the country’s top civil servant for five years, from 2019 until August 2024.
The notification stated, “Following the Cabinet Secretariat’s notification No. 511/1/1/2024-Cab. dated 16.07.2024, the Prime Minister has approved the appointment of Shri Rajiv Gauba, IAS (JH:1982) Retd. as a Full-Time Member of NITI Aayog, effective immediately and until further notice, with the same terms and conditions applicable to other Full-Time Members of NITI Aayog.”
Gauba has earlier served as Union Home Secretary and as Chief Secretary of Jharkhand.
Earlier, the Modi government had repeatedly given extensions to Gauba as Cabinet Secretary, eventually resulting in Gauba becoming the first officer to remain Cabinet Secretary for five years, for which the government had to relax the All India Services (AIS) (DCRB) Rules, 1958 and 56(d) of the Fundamental Rules.
