Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri Gets One-Year Extension

With an aim to ensure continuity in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) at a time when a high-stakes global diplomatic calendar looming over the government on Wednesday decided to extend the services of India’s foreign Secretary Vikram Misri for one more year.

In an order issued this evening the Department of personnel & Training (DoPT) said, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in service of Shri Vikram Misri, IFS (1989), Foreign Secretary, for a period of one year beyond 14.07.2026, i.e., up to 14.07.2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in terms of the provisions of F.R. 56(d).”

Misri, who took charge of the coveted post on July 15, 2024, was subsequently granted a 20-month post-superannuation extension in November 2024. He is now scheduled to complete that mandated two-year fixed tenure on July 14, 2026.

Sources in the know of the process leading to the decision said that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been prioritising institutional stability, primarily driven by India’s position as the host and chair of the upcoming BRICS Leaders Summit.

Given Misri’s deep expertise in regional security dynamics and his hands-on management of the ongoing preparatory negotiations, bureaucratic insiders said that a mid-summit leadership transition at MEA did not appear to be prudent.

The extension will now ensure that the diplomatic strategy remains seamless as New Delhi navigates a complex global consensus over the next quarter.

India officially assumed the BRICS Chairmanship for 2026, and the apex summit is slated to be held in New Delhi during the second week of September (12-13) this year. Operating under the central theme of “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” the multilateral gathering will see intense geopolitical negotiations and the arrival of several heads of state.
