Senior Gujarat Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Anupam Singh Gahlaut is known for his work in law and order, crime control, intelligence-led policing, and technology-driven investigations. By making him Police Commissioner of Ahmedabad ahead of the city's famous Rath Yatra, the government has placed an experienced officer at the helm of one of Gujarat's most sensitive security assignments.
The 1997-batch IPS officer, who has built a reputation as a quiet strategist, has previously served as Police Commissioner of Rajkot, Vadodara, and Surat, handling key law-and-order responsibilities in all three major cities. A native of Uttar Pradesh, he holds a B.E. (Civil) and an M.Tech. degree.
Gahlaut, whose appointment came on Wednesday, has consistently prioritised intelligence-based planning to maintain law and order in sensitive districts. His role in ensuring the peaceful conduct of major religious events, elections, and large public gatherings has been widely acknowledged.
Ahmedabad will host the 149th Rath Yatra on July 16, making Gahlaut's appointment strategically significant. The historic procession represents not only his first major challenge as the city's Police Commissioner but also his first major test in one of Gujarat's most high-profile policing assignments.
Due to retire in September 2032, Gahlaut has a long tenure ahead. He is also expected to play a significant role in maintaining law and order in Ahmedabad during the 2027 Gujarat assembly elections.
He has led multiple crackdowns against bootlegging, illegal activities, organised crime, and land mafias. He has also focused on strengthening coordination between district police and crime branches to make investigations more effective.
During his tenure, Gahlaut has emphasised the use of CCTV networks, surveillance systems, digital evidence, and data analytics. Expanding the use of modern technology in urban policing has remained a defining feature of his career.
He has also worked to strengthen dedicated mechanisms for swift action in cases involving crimes against women and cybercrime. Known as a calm and result-oriented officer, Gehlot places strong emphasis on field visits, professional policing, and data-driven decision-making.
As Surat Police Commissioner, he launched a dedicated cyber fraud war room.
In Vadodara, he successfully managed security arrangements during Ganesh Visarjan and other major festivals. Before taking charge as Police Commissioner, he served as Additional Director General of Police (CID-Intelligence), where he played a key role in internal security, sensitive intelligence inputs, and security planning for major public events across Gujarat.
