Ex-SC Judge V Ramasubramanian Appointed As Rights Panel Chief

The post has been lying vacant since June after Arun Kumar Mishra completed his tenure

Former Supreme Court judge V Ramasubramanian will take charge as the new chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission. The post has been lying vacant since June 1 after Justice (retd) Arun Kumar Mishra completed his tenure.

Along with Ramasubramanian, President Droupadi Murmu appointed Priyank Kanoongo, who served as chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and (retired) Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi as the members of the NHRC, the rights panel said.

"Hon'ble President of India appoints Shri Justice V.Ramasubramanian (Retd.) as the Chairperson, and Shri Priyank Kanoongo and Dr.Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi (Retd.) as the Members of the National Human Rights Commission(NHRC), India,” The NHRC posted on X.

After graduating in Chemistry, Ramasubramanian earned a law degree from Madras Law College. He served as additional judge at the Madras High Court and later Telengana High Court as well. In 2019 he took over as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court. In the same year, he was appointed to the Supreme Court.

During his tenure at the apex court, which ended upon his retirement in June, Ramasubramanian authored as many as 102 judgements. His judicial contributions include participation in key cases such as the 2016 Demonetisation policy.

According to reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-powered committee on December 18 to select the chairperson of the NHRC. Traditionally, eminent judges are appointed as the head of NHRC.
