To strengthen the security architecture of the country by adding additional hands to the National Security Council Secretariat, the Government promoted former Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) chief and deputy National Security Adviser (NSA) Rajinder Khanna as additional National Security Adviser.
Besides, the government has also appointed two new Deputy National Security Advisers. T V Ravichandran, a 1990-batch IPS officer of the Tamil Nadu Cadre, currently serving as special director in the Intelligence Bureau, and Pavan Kapoor, who held the position of secretary (west) in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been appointed to the post.
Khanna is a 1978-batch IPS officer of the Odisha cadre who served as the R&AW Chief from December 2014 to December 2016. Additionally, Khanna was appointed deputy NSA in January 2018 and headed the Technology and Intelligence (T&I) section.
Prior to these roles, Khanna also led the operations desk in the R&AW and is recognised as an expert on Pakistan and terrorism.
The National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) is led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with NSA Ajit Doval serving as its secretary, and it is the highest authority on all internal and external security matters.
Notably, Doval, a 1968 batch IPS officer, was appointed as the NSA for the third time by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government. He has been assigned the rank of Cabinet Minister.
