The Centre has extended the tenure of Rahul Navin, Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), by one year, allowing him to continue at the helm of the central financial investigation agency until August 13, 2027.
The decision was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and communicated through an order issued by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) on August 8, 2026.
According to the order, the ACC has approved the extension of Navin’s tenure as Director of Enforcement for one year beyond August 13, 2026, i.e. up to August 13, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
A significant aspect of the order is that Navin’s service has also been extended beyond his scheduled date of superannuation on July 31, 2027, enabling him to remain as ED Director until August 13, 2027, subject to further orders.
Navin is a 1993-batch Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) officer. He was appointed as the full-time Director of Enforcement in August 2024 for an initial two-year tenure. His tenure was therefore scheduled to end on August 13, 2026.
Rahul Navin had taken charge as acting Director of the Enforcement Directorate in September 2023, following the end of Sanjay Kumar Mishra’s tenure.
Before taking over as the agency’s chief, Navin had served as a Special Director in the ED and had extensive experience in taxation and international taxation. He was subsequently appointed full-time Director in August 2024.
The extension provides continuity in the leadership of the ED at a time when the agency is handling a large number of money-laundering, financial fraud and foreign-exchange-related investigations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
During Navin’s tenure, the agency has pursued several high-profile investigations involving financial fraud, real estate, online gaming and other economic offences.
The current framework permits the government to extend the tenure of the ED Director beyond the initial fixed term, subject to the applicable rules. Navin’s latest extension will take him to August 13, 2027, unless the government issues further orders earlier.
The official order uploaded by the user specifically confirms that the extension includes service beyond Navin’s superannuation date and remains effective up to August 13, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
