After West Bengal, poll-bound Tamil Nadu also witnessed a change in its top police officer, as the Election Commission of India on Thursday issued an order to remove incumbent Director General of Police (DGP) G Venkatraman.
In the order the ECI has appointed Director General level officer Sandeep Rai Rathore, a 1992-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, to head the Tamil Nadu police force replacing Venkatraman.
The ECI said the order would take immediate effect and the officer transferred out shall not be posted in any election related positions till the completion of assembly elections.
In separate orders the ECI has also appointed Additional Director General of Police Sanjay Kumar, a 1997-batch IPS officer, as the Commissioner of Police, Tambaram. He replaces A Amalraj and Abhishek Dixit was posted as Commissioner of Police, Madurai and RV Ramya Bharti posted as Inspector-General of Police, West Zone.
The transfers come days after Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) petitioned Chief Electoral Officer, Tamil Nadu, demanding that the DGP and senior police officials be transferred from their posts as they seem to favour the ruling party.
The petition was submitted after Vijay was disallowed to campaign in Perambur and had to cancel a meeting due to “lack of adequate security.”
