Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora To Retire On July 31

Putting to rest all speculation over a possible extension for Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, the office of Lieutenant-Governor V K Saxena has announced that the 1988-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer will retire on July 31, the date of his superannuation.

The order issued by the Home Department of the Delhi government has brought clarity over the leadership position in the National Capital’s Police establishment. According to it, the decision has been conveyed to the MHA, as the power to appoint or extend the tenure of the Delhi Police chief rests solely with North Block.

It is understood that the notification is a routine administrative step, typically issued two months before the scheduled retirement of All India Service officers.

Arora will retire after nearly 40 years of service. Before becoming the Delhi Police Commissioner, he had served as the Director-General of the ITBP. He took charge as Delhi’s CP on August 1, 2022, as the third officer from outside the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre to lead the police establishment in the National Capital, after Ajay Raj Sharma (UP cadre) and Rakesh Asthana (Gujarat cadre).

Now, speculation is rife in the corridors of power regarding his possible successor, with several UT cadre officers seen as strong contenders. Given the importance of the post for ensuring law and order in the Capital, all eyes are now fixed on the MHA.
