At a time when trade pacts between the US and India hit a precarious spot, the Central government set out to diversify the industrial export portfolio, exploring other international markets and, as a result, creating new export opportunities through business exhibitions and high-level delegations. "A vast international market is opening up for Indian industries and MSMEs," Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said during his recent visit to Gujarat. The Union Minister also said that the government was launching a global exhibition roadmap to enable Indian companies and industries to freely export their products to international markets.

So far, India has signed 15 free trade agreements (FTAs), covering more than 26 countries and economic blocs, and discussions are progressing with another 50 countries, according to official sources. This reflects the export sector's strong resilience amid global headwinds in the form of tariffs or geopolitical uncertainties.

Addressing a regional business conference in Gujarat, the Union Minister had said that India was simplifying and liberalising policies, highlighting the sustained efforts made to boost industrial growth.

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a significant role in this transition to an industrial growth-driven economy.

Policy Frameworks, Incentives

Through robust policy frameworks and incentive mechanisms, the government is actively encouraging industries, the Minister pointed out, adding that new policies have been formulated to strengthen the commerce sector. These policies have been revised periodically to make them simpler, more transparent, and business-friendly.

Governments, Goyal stressed, must adopt policies that give a fillip to new stakeholders.

Indian Products to Reach Global Markets

Announcing further developments, the Union Minister said that India was moving ahead with FTAs with six West Asian countries. FTAs have already been signed with the UK, New Zealand, Australia, the UAE, Oman, Mauritius, Switzerland, and Norway.

The FTA with the EU is in its final stage, while negotiations are underway with the US and Germany.

Underscoring the importance of Gujarat in the country's aspiration to become a developed nation, Goyal said that the country was entering its "Amrit Kaal" phase. "The Prime Minister has introduced new policies, programmes, and schemes with a long-term vision to boost commerce, which are equally significant for Gujarat and all other States," he said.

Reforms, Solutions

Meanwhile, Ajay Bhadoo, Additional Secretary, Union Commerce Ministry, said that entrepreneurs must make the transition from a "supplier-mindset" to solution providers.

To promote investment in sectors such as green hydrogen, defence, aerospace, and precision manufacturing, the Central government has introduced "plug-and-play facilities" and industrial clusters, he stated, adding that the Centre is also adopting "a reform-oriented approach" in the export sector by simplifying procedures for exporters.
