The government has made several senior level appointments of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in the key security, investigative and intelligence agencies like the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Border Security Force (BSF), the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has cleared a series of appointment proposals made by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in the level of Special Director General and Special Director across the agencies.

In the CRPF, Zaki Ahmad, IG, the UP cadre IPS officer of 1993-batch, has been appointed as Special Director General. He will serve in this capacity till his superannuation on 31 March 2028.

Alongside Ahmad, his cadre mate and 1994-batch IPS officer Raja Srivastava and 1994-batch Bihar cadre IPS officer Amit Kumar, who are currently serving as Additional Directors General in the CRPF, have been elevated as Special Director Generals, with their tenure lasting till 2029 and 2030 respectively. Deepak Kumar (IPS, AM:1994), presently ADG, CRPF, has also been appointed as Special DG on an in-situ basis for two years by upgrading his current post.

In the BSF, 1994-batch IPS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, currently holding the post of ADG, has been appointed as Special Director General. He will hold the post till his superannuation in March 2032.

Similarly, in the Intelligence Bureau three senior officers – Apte Vinayak Prabhakar (IPS, TG:1994), Manmeet Singh Narang (IPS, MP:1994) and Anurag Kumar, Additional Director, have been appointed as Special Directors on an in-situ basis for a two-year tenure. Their appointments come through temporary upgradation of their existing posts.

India’s premier anti-terror probe agency NIA too has seen the appointment of Rakesh Aggarwal (IPS, HP:1994), ADG, as Special Director General on an in-situ basis for two years, while in the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Anupama Nilekar Chandra (IPS, BH:1994), Additional Director General, has been appointed as Special Director General on an in-situ basis, also for two years.

Notably, with these appointments, the government has filled all the prestigious posts in the Level-16 of the pay matrix. The move also marks a significant reshuffle across India’s internal security and intelligence architecture, strengthening leadership positions at the senior-most levels of the multiple agencies.
