The government has issued an order appointing retired Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Nitin Gupta of 1986 batch as the new chairperson of the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA).

Gupta had earlier served as the chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). He led the CBDT until June 2024 and is credited with strengthening tax enforcement and improving direct tax collections through digitisation and data-driven assessments.

He will serve as the Chief of NFRA for a term of three years, or until he turns 65, whichever is earlier, according to the order issued by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT).

The DoPT order also said that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment of retired bureaucrats Smita Jhingran, P. Daniel, and Sushil Kumar as full-time members of the NFRA.

Jhingran, also a former IRS officer of the 1986 batch, previously served in the tax administration.

Daniel, an Indian Defence Estate Service (IDES) officer of the 1989 batch, is a former secretary in the Central Vigilance Commission.

Jaiswal, an Indian Audit & Accounts Service officer of the 1993 batch, had earlier served as the Director General of Audit (Central Receipt).

These appointments in the NFRA complete the leadership team at the regulator.

NFRA, under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, is the country’s independent watchdog for auditing and accounting standards.
