The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued an order affecting a major reshuffle in the leadership positions in its field formation to improve tax administration in the country.
As many as eight senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers in the rank of Principal Chief Commissioner/Principal Director General have been given new assignments as part of the reshuffle.
Preeti Garg, currently serving as Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (Pr. CCIT), Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, has been shifted to Karnataka and Goa. She will assume charge on August 1, following the retirement of Ganapati Bhat on July 31.
M Anil Kumar, presently Pr. CCIT, Kerala, has now been posted in the same rank in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Surabhi Varma Garg, who is currently serving as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the rank of Pr. CCIT, will take over as Pr. CCIT, West Bengal and Sikkim.
Another IRS officer E S Nagendra Prasad, also Pr. CCIT (OSD), has been posted in the rank for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, filling the vacancy created by Preeti Garg’s transfer. Amal Pusp, Pr. CCIT (OSD), is now appointed as Pr. CCIT, Uttar Pradesh (East) and Amitav, currently Pr. CCIT (OSD), has been given the important portfolio of Pr. DGIT (Investigation and Criminal Investigation), Delhi.
Prasenjit Singh, who was serving as Pr. CCIT (OSD), will now head Pr. DGIT (Training), Delhi, while Peeyush Jain, another officer in the rank of Pr. CCIT (OSD), has been posted as Pr. CCIT, Kerala, replacing M Anil Kumar.
According to the notification, the officers have been reassigned to strategic zones and directorates across the country to maintain administrative continuity and ensure operational efficiency. These transfers also mark a generational transition as senior officers approach retirement to ensure a smooth transition in leadership positions critical to tax administration and investigation.
Notably, the current reshuffle involves filling up positions in key zones with major economic, corporate, and compliance responsibilities, such as Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
The inclusion of multiple officers who previously held the position of OSD indicates the CBDT’s strategy to promote experienced leaders with internal knowledge into permanent leadership roles.
