Bhupender Gupta, Director (Technical), Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) India Limited is all set to become the next Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Limited, a Schedule ‘A’ Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Power.
Gupta is also holding the additional charge of the CMD of the Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVN)
Gupta’s name has been recommended by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) for the post on Wednesday. Nine candidates were interviewed for the post. The interviews were conducted on Wednesday afternoon and among the nine candidates, three were from the NHPC, one each from THDC India Limited, Rec Power Development & Consultancy Limited, Bridge And Roof Company (India) Limited, BSNL Limited, Power Finance Corporation Limited and Indian Railways Accounts Service.
Officials said Gupta’s name has been forwarded to the line Ministry of Power and he will now be appointed to the post of the NHPC CMD after requisite clearance and the approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Those, who were interviewed, included Suprakash Adhikari, the Director (Technical), NHPC, Ashok Kumar Nauriyal, the Executive Director, NHPC, Ramesh Mukhiya, the Managing Director, NHPC, Bhupender Gupta, Director (Technical), THDC, Rajesh Kumar Singh, CMD, Bridge And Roof Company (India) Limited, Thangrajan Subhash Chandra Bosh, the CEO, REC Power Development & Consultancy Limited, Krishna Mohan Srivastava, the Senior General Manager Business Area Head, Sitapur, BSNL, Ali Shah, the Executive Director (Entity Appraisal -II & CSR), Power Finance Corporation Limited and Mukta Shekhar, Joint Secretary, Indian Railways Accounts Service.
Gupta, who has an illustrious career in serving state-owned companies, is an electrical engineer with an MBA in Operation Management.
Before joining THDC, he held the position of Director (Technical) at Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan. He had also worked as Additional Chief Executive Officer in two subsidiaries of REC Limited namely - REC Transmission Projects Co. Ltd and REC Power Distribution Co. Ltd as Operation Head.
During his tenure in the REC, he was responsible for the execution, project management, contract management, and consultancy of power sector projects.
Gupta has a rich and vast working experience of around 33 years, of which he has worked in the power sector for about 29 years. He has been responsible for planning, designing, and executing contracts and large projects in the field of hydro power as well as transmission and distribution projects.
Before Joining REC Ltd. in 2007, he worked in SJVN Limited for 12 years in various positions and was responsible for the planning, erection and commissioning of electro-mechanical equipment of 1,500 MW at India’s largest Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Plant.
