B R Gavai Appointed 51st Chief Justice of India

Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of India. The President of India signed the Warrant of Appointment, and the official notification was issued by the Department of Justice on Tuesday

Justice Gavai will assume office on 14th May 2025, succeeding the incumbent Chief Justice.

Born on 24th November 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gavai began his legal career in 1985. 

He initially trained under Barrister Raja S. Bhonsale, a former Advocate General and High Court Judge, before practicing independently in the Bombay High Court and later at its Nagpur Bench. His areas of specialization include constitutional and administrative law.

Justice Gavai has served as Standing Counsel for several civic bodies and universities in Vidarbha and held key legal positions including Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court.

 He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003 and became a permanent judge in 2005. In 2019, he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
