Ajay Kumar Appointed Chairman of UPSC

Kumar, who retired as Defence Secretary in October 2022, will have a tenure till October 2027 as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)

The President of India has appointed former Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar (Retd IAS: 1985: KL) as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), under Article 316(1) of the Constitution.

Kumar, who retired as Defence Secretary on October 31, 2022, is eligible to serve in the post till October 2027, in accordance with the prescribed terms of service.

He succeeds Preety Sudan (Retd IAS: 1983: AP), who completed her tenure as UPSC Chairman on April 29, 2025.

The UPSC, a constitutional body, is headed by a chairperson and can have up to ten members. It is responsible for conducting the annual Civil Services Examination in three stages — Preliminary, Main, and Interview — for recruitment to various civil services of the Government of India.
