But what exactly are "agentic payments"? Instead of opening a UPI app and approving every transaction yourself, you could instruct an AI agent to handle routine tasks such as paying recurring bills, booking services, or making purchases within a predefined budget. For smaller and routine transactions, the proposed framework could eventually reduce the need for individual approval every time. But convenience comes with a major question: who is responsible if an AI agent makes an incorrect or unauthorised payment? Banks, fintech companies, AI platforms and regulators will need clear rules around consent, authentication, spending limits, alerts, refunds and accountability. UPI isn't being replaced by AI. Instead, AI could become a new layer on India's digital payments infrastructure.
