Actor Manoj Bajpayee's Brother Appointed A Member Of The National Green Tribunal

Film actor Manoj Bajpayee's brother Sujit Kumar Bajpayee, along with three others, has been appointed an expert member at the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The Government has also appointed two judicial members — Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain and Justice Umesh Chandra Sharma.

Other expert members appointed with Bajpayee are Sudhir Kumar Chaturvedi, a retired IFoS officer of the 1986 batch Gujarat cadre, Ishwar Singh, a retired IFoS officer of the 1988 batch AGMUT cadre, and Prashant Gargava, the former Director of the National Clean Air Programme under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).

Before the appointment, Bajpayee was a member and Member-Secretary of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). He also served as Joint Secretary (lateral entry) in the MoEFCC for five years (September 2019-September 2024). Before joining the Government, he served for around 19 years in NHPC Ltd, a PSU under the Ministry of Power.

Chaturvedi retired in December 2024 as Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Head of Forest Force (PCCF & HoFF), Government of Gujarat, while Singh superannuated in May 2022 as Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF), Government of the NCT of Delhi.

Justice Jain, a former judge of the Delhi High Court, is currently serving as a member of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC). Justice Sharma, ex-judge of Allahabad High Court, is serving as a Judicial Member at the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT), regional branch, Chandigarh. 

The National Green Tribunal was set up on October 18, 2010, under the National Green Tribunal Act 2010, for effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection and conservation of forests and other natural resources, including enforcement of any legal right relating to the environment, and for giving relief and compensation for damages to persons and property.

It is a specialised body equipped with the necessary expertise to handle environmental disputes involving multidisciplinary issues. New Delhi is the principal place of sitting of the tribunal, with Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata, and Chennai the other four places where the tribunal also sits.
