In a major move aimed at addressing the shortage of senior police officers, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the empanelment of 13 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers for appointment to the rank of Inspector General (IG) or equivalent at the Centre.

In the order, the government said that the decision in this regard was taken by the ACC, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the proposal of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

The order, which was issued by the Police-I Division (IPS-IV Section) of the MHA from Kartavya Bhavan here, the empanelment has been carried out under different consideration categories, including First Review, Second Review, and Initial Deferred.

According to the order, eight senior IPS officers belonging to different cadres and batches have been empanelled for the IG or equivalent posts. They are Manoj Kaushik, a 2001-batch IPS officer of Jharkhand cadre and seven of them from 2006-batch including Dumbere Milind Mahadeo (AGMUT cadre), S Premalatha (Bihar cadre), RV Asari (Gujarat cadre), Chandra Kishore Mina (Maharashtra cadre), B Sumathi (Telangana cadre), Akash Kulhary (Uttar Pradesh cadre) and Manoj Kumar (Uttar Pradesh cadre).

Empanelled Officers

As part of the second review category, four officers have been cleared for the empanelment, and they all belong to the 2003 batch from different cadres. They are Akhilesh Kumar Singh from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Ashok Kumar from the Gujarat cadre, H. Thanghaulien Gangte from the Manipur cadre, and Manoj Tiwari from the Sikkim cadre.

Dhruv Gupta, a 2005-batch IPS officer from the Chhattisgarh cadre, has been empanelled as part of the initial deferred case category.

In the notification, the MHA clarified that the order in which the officers’ names appear does not indicate their inter-se seniority, which means the relative seniority ranking among a specific group of employees appointed to the same cadre, usually through the same recruitment process or batch.

Eligible For IG Post

Now, with these officers, empanelled to the level of IGP at the Centre, they would be eligible for their appointments as Inspector General or equivalent in Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Central Police Organisations (CPOs), and other Central deputation posts, though these would be subject to the availability of vacancies and further approvals as per rules.
