The Union government on Sunday issued an order appointing 1992-AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre IAS officer Rajeev Verma as Delhi’s new chief secretary. He will take charge of the office from October 1 following the retirement of incumbent Chief Secretary Dharmendra, a 1989-batch IAS officer of AGMUT cadre.
Before being appointed as the Chief Secretary of the government of NCT Delhi, Verma has been serving as the Chief Secretary of Chandigarh for the past one year. Earlier, he also served as the Chief Secretary of Puducherry.
The cadre controlling authority, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in an order dated September 28,2025, said, “With the approval of the Competent Authority, Sh. Rajeev Verma, IAS (AGMUT:1992) is hereby transferred from Chandigarh to Delhi and posted as Chief Secretary, GNCTD w.e.f. 01.10.2025 or from the date of joining, whichever is later.”
Verma, who holds an MTech degree from IIT, is a native of Uttar Pradesh, had earlier also served in the Delhi government as the Finance and Revenue Secretary between 2018 and 2022.
He has also held key positions in Delhi’s Transport department and has held posts in the rank of secretary and additional secretary level at other departments in the national capital.
During his over three-decade-long bureaucratic career, Verma has also served in other key posts in the Central government in the Ministries of Defence, Power and Health & Family Welfare.
The Chief Secretary's post is very crucial as it bridges the gap between Delhi's elected government, bureaucracy, and the Lieutenant Governor. The appointment assumes significance in view of the implementation of the policies of the Rekha Gupta government, which was sworn in earlier this year.
With winter approaching in Delhi, the new Chief Secretary will be instrumental in framing and implementing policies helpful in reducing pollution, which was one of the top priorities of the BJP in its poll plank in the Assembly elections held earlier this year.
