1989 IPS Officer Sanjay Mukherjee Appointed As West Bengal’s DGP

Mukherjee has been named the new DGP, replacing Vivek Sahay, who is scheduled to retire by end of May 2024

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has approved the appointment of IPS Sanjay Mukherjee as the Director General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal. Mukherjee, a 1989 batch IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre, will replace Vivek Sahay, a West Bengal cadre's 1988 batch IPS officer.

Yesterday, in compliance with the Election Commission’s directive, the West Bengal government had given the charge to Sahay for the post of DGP. This decision was based on the fact that Sahay was the senior-most officer of the state cadre.

Vivek Sahay is scheduled to retire on May 31, 2024, which is why Mukherjee has been named as the new DGP. This is in line with the rules of the ECI that inhibit an official, who is scheduled to retire amid the electoral process, from holding the post of a returning officer, District Magistrate, Director General of Police and Chief Secretary.
